Summary

Reclamation shows a chat between Artanis and Kaldalis on an asteroid or planetoid orbiting Aiur. The protoss reclamation of Aiur from the zerg begins the next day. Artanis doubts whether it is right for many protoss to die to repossess the symbol of the old protoss culture, one that lost Aiur due to its own critical flaw of disunity. Kaldalis counters that the reclamation is for the new unified protoss civilization, and that its hereafter is worth fighting for. Artanis is placated, and the two render to the Gilded Armada.[18]

The opening cinematic, every bit narrated by Artanis, shows a protoss forcefulness contesting against the zerg in an effort to retake Aiur. Kaldalis stated that with the Khala they couldn't lose. During the boxing, the group'south high templar merged into an archon. The protoss appeared to lose, when more than were warped into combat to confront the zerg.[nineteen]

The reclamation of Aiur is soon revealed to be a cunning trap past the fallen xel'naga Amon, who takes advantage of the Daelaam's connection to the Khala to possess the entire force. Zeratul is too late to achieve Artanis and valiantly fights him to sever his nerve cords, doing so at the cost of his own life. Artanis mourns Zeratul and promises to fulfill what he wanted - a unified protoss society. He manages to discover other Daelaam who had their cords severed by the Nerazim, including the stage-smith Karax and fled the planet on the Spear of Adun. In the ship, the protos were amazed by the lost, avant-garde engineering science. Karax meanwhile took the opportunity to sever the cords of the warriors in stasis, while Artanis discovers Rohana, a Thousand Preserver. Artanis is alarmed that she has her cords, but Rohana insists that she can hold off Amon's wrath and would be able to help more doing so, which he reluctantly allows.

Needing reinforcements to reclaim Aiur and save their people, Artanis was soon contacted by the Nerazim matriarch Vorazun, who informed him that Amon had opened a portal to send his forces from Aiur to Shakuras and that they needed assistance. Per Zeratul's wish, the Spear of Adun made their way to Shakuras and evacuated as much Nerazim every bit they could. Vorazun so suggested overloading the planet'south core to deny Amon the planet, which Artanis accustomed every bit they could make an case out of him by wiping out a significant amount of zerg and hybrid at the same time. Afterward enough of Amon's forces had entered the planet, Artanis overloaded the cadre, destroying Shakuras. The Nerazim were welcomed aboard the Spear of Adun. Artanis had Vorazun send her aristocracy templar to find Amon's hybrid facilities.

The post-obit section contains timeline information which isn't necessarily in chronological club.

Artanis headed to Korhal where he was greeted past Jim Raynor. Raynor was glad to see Artanis merely was saddened to hear of Artanis' death. Artanis asked Raynor if he could accept the Keystone, as it could be useful in dealing with Amon. Raynor agreed, simply too warned Artanis that the Dominion was under assail by Moebius Corps, led by the hybrid. The forces had disabled the Sky Shield, an orbital defense platform which would crush Augustgrad if not dealt with. Fortunately, the protoss were able to stabilize the platform. Raynor then informed Artanis that Moebius was fine until recently, when they just received crazed transmissions, which Artanis realized was the work of Amon. Despite saving the platform, Moebius forces connected to assault Augustgrad with the hybrid, who utilized the Keystone by channeling void energy to stun all terrans, including their Mobius allies. Afterwards the battle, the protoss took the Keystone and Karax began studying it, eventually last that they could incorporate Amon in information technology while destroying all potential hosts, which would banish him dorsum to the Void.

Karax shortly informed Artanis of a Purifier facility at Glacius that was nether the threat of Tal'darim forces that were destroying it. Alarak noticed the group but did non care nigh what they would do, as he would end his job one way or another. Fortunately, the Daelaam were able to warp the cache away, which defenseless Alarak's attention. The protoss opened the cache and found "Fenix", who had suffered from memory loss and believed he was a dragoon.

The protoss presently headed to Ulnar to seek answers from the xel'naga. Inside, Artanis establish Kerrigan, but agreed to work with her to deal with Amon. Their search for the xel'naga resulted in failure as they had all been killed. At the same time, Alarak boarded the Spear of Adun and warned Vorazun that Artanis was walking into a trap, who cautiously took his help. Vorazun sent protoss forces to rescue Artanis and Kerrigan, who were dealing with Amon's trap - a portal to the Void. The group was able to destroy the portals and parted ways. Artanis and so met with Alarak, who told him that Amon had betrayed his people. He wished to invoke Rak'Shir against Ma'lash, and if he became the new Highlord, he would temporarily cease hostilities between their people. Artanis accepted, just warned Alarak to non try anything under him.

Heading to Slayn, where the Tal'darim death fleet was assembled, Alarak had the protoss slay Ma'lash'south guardians to prevent them from interfering with Rak'Shir, before challenging Ma'lash. Despite the assistance of his ain forces and the hybrid, Alarak succeeded in killing Ma'lash and brought the entirety of the Tal'darim nether his fold.

Fenix informed Artanis that they could proceeds Purifier allies from Cybros, despite Rohana'south insistence that the Purifiers could not be trusted. Arriving at Endion, the protoss disabled the field protecting Cybros, which in turn caused the zerg and hybrid to brainstorm infesting it. Fortunately, they were able to reactivate the garrison and cleanse the facility, upon which the Purifiers besides cleansed Endion of the zerg. Clolarion, while wary of the protoss due to the animosity between their people, eventually agreed to join their cause as long as Artanis held truthful to his words, appointing Fenix as their representative.

Vorazun's templar shortly returned and informed the protoss that Moebius Corps had gear up a hybrid facility on the asteroid chugalug of Revanscar. The protoss knew that they had to eliminate Amon'southward hybrid forces and attacked the facility, only to be surprised by a pre-emptive attack by Moebius Corps. Karax led a group of protoss to strike at the facility'due south core while the corps were distracted and successfully destroyed the facility. Artanis promoted him to templar for his valiant actions after the battle. At the same time, Amon was angered by Artanis' actions and taunted him to return to Aiur. Rohana then informed him that Amon intended to bring the full might of the Aureate Fleet upon their return, but they would be able to delay their inflow if they destroyed the psionic matrix.

Assembling anybody again, Artanis revealed his plan to the leaders. Alarak was upset that they were taking the long route and wanted to simply destroy Aiur, but this was received with hostility by the others, especially Fenix. Alarak reluctantly agreed to follow Artanis' plan and they split upwards into three groups to destroy the psi-matrices, which was successful. Amon then tried to inhabit his incomplete torso, merely the protoss were able to destroy the void shards powering them, allowing them to destroy his hybrid body.

At this fourth dimension, Amon possessed the Golden Armada and sought vengeance, bringing downward the residual of his zerg and the possessed protoss, led by Selendis. The protoss were able to hold out long enough for the Keystone to fully charge. Artanis fought Selendis until Amon's hold over her was gone and convinced her to sever her connectedness to the Khala. Communicating with the rest of the recently-freed protoss, they all severed their cords, leaving Amon with no ane to possess and he was banished back to the Void. With the threat of Amon at present gone for the time existence, the protoss began to rebuild their social club, at present unified.

Development

The game's original logo

Past 2013, Blizzard Amusement had begun working on Legacy of the Void's story, scripts and missions.[44] The development team (at to the lowest degree for the singleplayer) is by and large the same equally the one that worked on Wings of Liberty,[45] though new artists were brought onto the game's art team that had not worked on Heart of the Swarm.[46] Additionally, prior to the summer of 2013, members of Team 4 who had worked on Titan were transferred to work on Legacy.[47]

By Feb 2014, Blizzard was "difficult at work" on the game,[48] and piece of work on the game'southward cinematics was well underway.[49] By August 2014, the development squad was in discussion concerning community suggestions pertaining to the expansion.[50] The game was formally revealed at BlizzCon 2014.[51]

The game would continue to be supported mail-release.[52]

Storyline

The story of Legacy of the Void was the first point of development for the game, as the gameplay of StarCraft II had been solidified with the previous titles. The story was worked on collaboratively between James Waugh, Chris Metzen, Samwise Didier, Jason Huck, Allen Dilling, Justin Thavirat, Matt Morris, and Dustin Browder over the period of several months.[46] Waugh served as the atomic number 82 writer,[53] while the overall story arc was created past Metzen,[26] who had a more than easily off office when compared to previous installments.[54] Valerie Watrous served as a co-author.[54]

One of the original writing inspirations was Vii Samurai.[26] Information technology iwas intended to be a protoss story starting time and foremost, that it service the protoss primarily, while also wrapping up lingering threads from the previous games. As of Baronial 2013, the game's story had been written, many of the cinematics had been completed, and phonation actors had begun work.[55] The story was intended to capture the tragic nature of war, and to have a nighttime tone, as per information technology being the concluding installment in the StarCraft II trilogy.[56] Information technology was thematically based around the idea of a race that needs to change, how the protoss have been bound to a method of thinking that has served its fourth dimension.

Information technology was intended for the story to have the post-obit tenants:

  • Create a distinctly protoss story while wrapping up the story threads of the StarCraft II trilogy - keep the story focused on the protoss and their lore.
  • Create an epic stop times scenario for the player to stand confronting - deliver on the threat of Amon.
  • Fulfill the fantasy of playing equally protoss.

Through the nature of the Khala, it is intended that the game explore themes of collectivism vs. individuality.[46] Per the in a higher place "fantasy" tenant, the overall fantasy of Legacy of the Void corresponds to the protoss returning to the fore, for i last battle.[57]

A challenge for writing for the game is that the protoss do not possess the same kind or amount of body language every bit humans. The writers watched episodes of ER, for equally it per its nature equally a medical drama, the characters' faces are often covered bar their optics. Eye motion was studied in regards to how information technology could apply to protoss characters, as their eyes are their primary conveyors of emotion. While the protoss are intended to be "unkowable" (in regards to humans/terrans), it was also intended that elements of humanity still shine through.

Zeratul was originally the protagonist of the game - he had featured prominently in the previous installments of the StarCraft II trilogy. However, the protagonist function was changed to Artanis, as the developers felt that as Legacy of the Void was a protoss story, Artanis was in a better position to represent the protoss race as a whole. It was decided that Zeratul's office was all-time served as a mentor figure in the game's story, said part likened to that of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars universe in this regard.

Originally, characters from The Nighttime Templar Saga were to feature in the game. Notwithstanding, according to Waugh, their inclusion felt forced, and the idea was abandoned.[58]

Tie-in Media

Similar to previous installments, Legacy of the Void has received necktie-in media. Reclamation is a prequel short that takes place just prior to the game'southward opening cinematic.[59] A quintet of brusque stories will be released in the leadup to the game.[60]

Singleplayer

"We want to go that feeling of 'We're the Protoss and we have technology that you oasis't even dreamed of. We volition literally plough you into a parking lot if you mess with u.s.a..' We desire to become that sense of power without the focus on a single graphic symbol."

Past BlizzCon 2014, work was even so beingness done on balancing the campaign.[61] By June 2015, the game's Brutal style was being balanced.[62]

The developers are open up to including Easter eggs in the game. However, Easter eggs are ordinarily inserted towards the end of production, and equally of the to a higher place date, had not been considered.[63]

A focus of development was that gameplay drive story in the game, and that the two mesh well together.[45]

As of November 2013, Dustin Browder was satisfied with the game's story, but felt the missions and campaign mechanics needed more work, to make them "experience" similar protoss missions.[64]

Multiplayer

In 2011, Chris Sigaty expressed doubt that new units would be added to the game, and that if they are added, it is likely that other units will be removed from multiplayer.[65] [66] This was refuted by Blizzard employee Kevin Johnson in 2013 stating that "no new units isn't a management we're considering or have ever considered."[67] New units were revealed at BlizzCon 2014.[68]

The game's beta was announced in March, 2015.[35]
